Silica Sand for Artificial Grass
Are you looking for where to buy silica sand for artificial grass? Cairo Minerals offers high-graded, processed, and sieved silica sand for artificial grass, which is natural grains. Silica sand is processed in our screening plant after Extracting and transported to our site for screening. We can grade and meet all required practical sizes on our site and per FIFA criteria.
Furthermore, the silica sand for artificial grass has become a hot request in the last five years, which automatically translates to high world production of artificial grass and replacing natural grass.
FIFA has encouraged and recommended using artificial grass instead of natural grass. Because of this, many buyers have ordered silica sand, including the football federation, individual companies, Sports Clubs, landscaping, and houses.
Silica sand is used for artificial grass, football pitches, beach volleyball, tennis court, and tennis soccer.
The standard sizes of silica sand are typically used in filling artificial grass.
We use the sand for both tennis and football artificial turf. However, two different granulation exist:
1. Tennis: sand 0,4-0,8 mm (should not exceed 1,00 mm in any case).
2. Football: 0,5-1,25 mm (should not exceed 1,50 mm in any case).
Generally, silica sand granulation depends on the density of the synthetic grass. When the grass is quite dense ( more than 45000 stitches), we have to use the smaller granulation ( 0,5-0,7 mm) to place the sand into the grass pile. Also, the sand cannot be placed inside when the grass is very dense. However, in the case of lower density ( soccer – around 10 000 stitches), you can easily install the bigger granulation, but never higher than 1,5 mm (although some companies install even more prominent – but it is not according to any standards or international requests).
• The standard sizes of silica sand typically used in filling beach volleyball
Silica Sand for beach volleyball usually uses the sand from the beach at the seaside. (I suppose that should be the same granulation as football synthetic grass).
• The standard sizes of silica sand typically used in filling tennis courts and tennis soccer
I have already explained above for both soccer and tennis.
• The quantity of silica sand that can be filled per square meter
As earlier mentioned, we install different quantities depending on the grass’s density and height.
For tennis, we install 12 kg/sqm on very dense and short grass (11 mm), while for less overgrown tennis grass with a higher pile, we sometimes install 25-30 kg/sqm.
However, for soccer, things are more precise. We install 18-25 kg/sqm, depending on the grass height.
• When can we change or replace silica sand for artificial grass?
We consider the silica sand as a stabilizing infill. Thus, it’s permanently installed on the bottom of the grass for soccer, and we install SBR rubber on the top. In that case, removing or reinstalling the silica sand is challenging as we first have to remove the SBR granules…and that is quite expensive.
It is easier for tennis, as there is no SBR on the top. So, we can remove some quantity of the silica sand (mainly on the baseline – as it gets more complicated due to the high traffic use). We draw the amount of the silica sand with special brushes and then install the new quantity of silica sand. Typically, we can make this for tennis courts once per year, mainly end of the summer, before autumn comes and rain starts. In this procedure, we must be careful with the grass pile as too much brushing can damage it.

• Does silica sand’s high quality support the Turf’s long life?
Of course, when the grass of silica sand is completely and correctly filled with good quality, washed, dried and rounded pure silica sand, it keeps the pile-up. Therefore, only the top of the grass is damaged due to hard use. The grass filled with silica sand is protected, and the excellent quality/quantity of the sand also improves the water permeability.
• How much annual consumption of Turf per year worldwide?
It is difficult to say as many companies worldwide sell synthetic Turf in every corner of the world.
• What are the most common methods for spreading or filling silica sand into Turf?
The most common and the best way is an installation with a silica sand spreader. Check the link of the machine that I use http://www.redexim.com/redexim06.html.
You install around 1 t of the silica sand in the box, connect it to the tractor, and drive it on the field. It spreads the sand everywhere. Then you brush so that the sand goes deep into the grass – the more you brush, the deeper the sand.
